October 12, 2024, marks the 10-year anniversary of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and Fair Benefit-Sharing (ABS). As an extension of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this treaty has now been ratified by 142 countries, leading to the development of over 130 national ABS laws worldwide.  This webinar will explore the key principles of ABS, practical compliance strategies, and emerging regulatory trends on ABS affecting beauty and personal care brands. Topics will include best practices for ensuring legal access to biodiversity-derived ingredients, enforcement risks, and the evolving landscape of benefit-sharing obligations—including the potential impact of new frameworks such as the new Digital Sequence Information (DSI) mechanism, patent disclosure requirements under WIPO, and added corporate due diligence obligations under the EU’s CS3D directive. With the regulatory landscape becoming more fragmented, understanding ABS compliance is essential for companies relying on nature to create innovative beauty products.

Why Attend:

As beauty and personal care brands increasingly rely on natural ingredients for innovation, governments increasingly seek financial contributions from the private sector to contribute to biodiversity conservation. With over 130 national laws now in place requiring such “benefit-sharing”—and new frameworks emerging around innovative techniques drawing on “sequence data” from nature—cosmetic companies face growing legal and reputational risks. This webinar is essential for understanding how to navigate this complex landscape, ensure lawful access to biodiversity-based ingredients, and stay ahead of global compliance trends shaping the future of sustainable beauty.
